On December 14th at 6pm the Reno City Council will consider a proposal to rezone a portion of the UNR Main Station Farm light industrial. This land is ideally suited for what it already is, that is, agriculture and wildlife habitat. Local food and farming advocates are encouraging the Council to look to a different future for that property and refrain from building businesses on a flood plain, and ideally, zone the property agricultural and open space. Should the Council vote down this proposal or postpone this decision until a later time it would leave the door open for other plans that could be more beneficial to our community. It will also give our community more time to discuss and plan for healthier alternatives to the zoning. This will benefit the growing local food movement, future agricultural education for our youth and the sustainability of Wolf Pack Meats.

Please sign THIS PETITION opposing the rezoning of the UNR Main Station Farm.

We’re encouraging everyone to attend the meeting to show the City Council we the decision to reject the zone change. Please attend and fill out a public comment form to make your voice heard. No need to speak if you’d rather not, but your public comment form demonstrates the level of support.

5:30 – Arrive early to submit your Public Comment Form. They will not be accepted after 6 p.m. There will be a group of local food activists out front at 5pm helping people to fill out comments forms. You can either submit a comment card or sign up to speak for 3 minutes during the public comment section of the meeting.
6:00 – Meeting begins
Reno City Hall, Council Chambers

1 E. 1st Street, Reno (public parking garage next to CityHall)

PLEASE READ THIS VERY THOUGHTFUL LETTER IN OPPOSITION TO THE REZONING BY A VERY DEDICATED GBCFC CO-OP MEMBER-OWNER & LOCAL FOOD ACTIVIST:

It’s Not Local Food without Local Farmland and a University Agricultural Program to Back It
Farming in America is at a turning point. Rapidly rising global food demands, spiking food and fuel prices, and the ever-present threat of development are pressuring our farmers to squeeze the most out of their land or else leave.

We have been supporting our local farmers by buying locally at the Great Basin Community Food Coop and local farmers markets. We have joined CSAs and bought meat form local ranchers. We even go out to eat at local restaurants that are buying for local farmers.

The next important step to support our local farmers is to join efforts to protect the little farmland we have left in our community, such as the UNR Main Station farmland off McCarran and Mill Street. According to American Farmland Trust, we’re losing 2 acres of farmland to development every minute. The farms and ranches that supply local markets—those closest to urban centers—are the most at risk. Do you, as a community member, want to see the last remaining farmland in Reno turn into another box store development?

What’s unique about the 104-acre farmland is that it holds the floodwaters in times when the Truckee River overflows, thereby providing an important ecological function to filter the water and fertilizing the land. It functions as grassland for the research and teaching performed by the Rangeland Management program at UNR. It also provides a much-loved historic view corridor to the Truckee meadows, telling the story of why this flat, fertile land functions well as farmland and was chosen as such by pioneers. Shouldn’t this historic, agricultural and ecologically significant land be preserved for future generations?

The 104 acres of farmland that the UNR has annexed to the City of Reno is up for rezoning at the next City Council meeting, Wednesday, December 14h, at 6 pm. As a community, we are asking the City of Reno to postpone decision on this rezoning request. We ask UNR to work with us to develop a long-term sustainable plan for the entire farmland area at the Main Station, so that it can continue to provide the important flood acreage for our community, maintain the space for our land-grant UNR College of Agriculture, and preserve the last of our urban farmland, that speaks of the past and promises the future potential of our local food security.

With our combined vision, we can help keep agriculture viable in our community to continue providing the delicious foods, economic benefits and improved environmental quality we’ve all come to enjoy.

Sincerely,

Jana Vanderhaar, concerned citizen

CRITICAL WOLF PACK MEATS MEETING:

Thursday, October 27, 11 a.m.

Nevada Department of Agriculture, Conference Room
405 South 21st Street, Sparks

Please plan to attend a meeting of the CABNR Advisory Board/Stakeholders for Wolf Pack Meats and the Main Station Farm. This is a CRITICAL meeting as the UNR Administration and a developer propose to take the most fertile land of the Main Station Farm and develop it into offices and homes. Please forward this to interested parties.

If you support sustaining Northern Nevada’s only full process slaughter, cut and wrap facility please come to this meeting! Wolf Pack Meats processes for five (5) of the six (6) local ranchers your Great Basin Community Food Co-op buys from. Buying meat from local producers ensures good raising practices. Your food co-op visits all of our ranchers to make sure their animals are raised in open pastures, fed grass or other high quality non-GMO feed (especially for pork), and free of added antibiotics and hormones. With only 4 major agro-corporate companies owning the majority of meat production in America, it is increasingly important for us to support and buy from our local ranchers. Over 70% of Nevada’s agriculture is alfalfa and beef…which the majority of is shipped out of our state, sold as stock, or fattened up in the Mid-West on GMO corn and soy, antibiotics and hormones (all of which have been proven to contribute to making people sick and an increase in weight when consuming these products!!). Not to mention the process requires a hefty amount of non-renewable energy inputs…shipping 1,000+ lb animals back and forth across the country!

If you eat meat but haven’t given it much thought, NOW IS THE TIME or else we risk using the only processing facility in Northern Nevada which allows local ranchers to sell to YOUR co-op! Sure, everyone is selling grass-fed beef these days but NO OTHER RETAIL STORE in Reno is SELLING NEVADA BEEF!! If the University of Nevada-Reno President, Marc Johnson cuts Wolf Pack Meats from the budget it will greatly impact our community’s ability to purchase local meat in anything smaller than a 1/4 cow at a time! People may think it’s no big deal now, but we do not want to wait until the USDA stops subsidizing the commercial meat market and we have to pay the real price for poisoned meat in America…or we continue our trend for the last few decades and allow big agro-corporate farms to put every small rancher out of business until we have NO ACCESS to fresh, high-quality, local meat.

COME TO THE MEETING, TELL YOUR FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CO-WORKERS! If you can’t make it be sure to send your comments about this very important cause to UNR’s President MARC JOHNSON – marc.johnson@unr.edu

We are forwarding the message below from Ann Louhela of Nevada Grown. While we understand that not all of our members are interested in the issue of meat production or consumption, we seek to fulfill the 5th Cooperative Principle: Education, Training and Information. (Read more about the 7 Cooperative Principles)

The Great Basin Community Food Co-op wishes to provide the best possible sources and most wholesome choices available to our members. We are not interested in telling people how to eat or what exactly their particular body may need for optimal health, we just wish to accommodate each person’s needs with the freshest, local options available.

If you do consume meat and wish to do so in a more sustainable, humane, local and healthier fashion (grass-fed, antibiotic & hormone free, etc.) then please consider attending the meeting below and advocating for Wolf Pack Meats. They are currently the only full scale slaughter and package facility where the entire process is certified by the USDA…which means that the co-op gets to buy meat that is processed in this facility and sell it at the retail level. Wolf Pack Meats currently provides four of the six local meat options available in the freezer section at the GBCFC: Albaugh Ranch (grass-fed beef), Sod Buster Farms (local pork-antibiotic, hormone and GMO free), Gloria Montero’s natural Goat Meat, Collis Ranch Sausage (antibiotic and hormone free) with Holley Family Farms beef coming soon at the new location…when we actually have freezer space to house the goods.

We hope to see you there :)

Mark your calendars for Monday, October 10, if you are interested in supporting the movement for local beef production in Northern Nevada and California. Input is needed from producers, restaurants and retailers, and consumers. Learn more about the current situation and what we can do to support keeping a slaughterhouse in our region.

It would be a sad day if we no longer have the option to buy our beef, pork and lamb from local producers.

Meeting agenda is copied below. Please forward to other interested parties.

Monday, October 10, 2011

9:00 am – 12:00 noon

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Carson City

2621 Northgate Ln., Suite 17, Carson City

GBCFC On the Move!

As mentioned in our first moving update, we had a couple of construction setbacks which delayed our open date from September 1, 2011 until ??? Now that we are back on track and moving forward, we are looking at opening the new co-op Storefront on either November 1, 2011 or January 1, 2012. We have been fortunate enough to receive some wonderful feedback from our mentors at the National Cooperative Grocers Association. They helped us to see how potentially chaotic it could be if we try to move at any point past November 1 through the following December holiday season. Therefore, if the building is not ready for us to move in by Nov 1, the actual move will take place on January 1, 2012.

The wonderful upside to the increased delay is the fact that we now have been able to coordinate and organize more of our internal processes. We have also been able to work with Jana Vanderhaar, certified edible landscape designer, on the exterior foliage at the new co-op site. The plan and design is absolutely inspiring and amazing! Please check it out here and feel free to send any comments, questions, concerns, or a desire to be involved to the local food committee.

Weekly Availability List

Now, let’s turn our attention to the last day of August and focus on the amazing harvest that is underway here in Northern NV! As many of you are probably aware, the co-op sends out a weekly list of what’s available locally for our community business partners and members to place special orders. If you wish to be added to this list, email orders@greatbasinfood.coop. Check out a few highlights from this week’s fresh farm list:

pickling cucumbers- Lattin Farms- 22# for $28

dill can be ordered from Avanzino Farms, Salisha’s Delicious, and Spanish Spring Greens

Cherry tomatoes from Mewaldt’s Organic Produce- the first local tomatoes of the season! 2.50wholesale and 3.99 at store

Basil from Mewaldt Organics – $9/lb or 2.50 for 1/4lb or 3.79 in store (we should have plenty of fresh local tomoates by the end of the month for canning!!)

The Distributors of Organic & Local Produce & Products Center or DROPP is a business focused on the storage, distribution, and eventually pick up of locally grown produce from growers/producers within the Great Basin Community Food Co-op’s (GBCFC) defined food shed. The DROPP defines local produce as any produce sourced from within our food shed. The food shed is based off our local watershed for our location, Reno, Nevada. Three river systems were chosen to define the watershed: Truckee, Carson, and Walker Rivers.

For the past several years the GBCFC has been a means for local restaurants to order and buy local produce at wholesale prices. The produce department sends out bi-weekly lists of local produce availability to interested restaurants, institutions and our members. To the best of our ability, we include the product description, the quantities available and the pricing The current size of the store is too small to store any produce for an extended amount of time. In the past our space restrictions have been a hindrance to the amount of local produce bought by local restaurants as they must pick up the food soon after it is delivered or it will perish.

DROPP’s goal is to help build the local food infrastructure in the region and to connect farmers to restaurants and institutions. The team behind DROPP believe that if we can eventually travel the food shed and pick up from farmers and make deliveries to restaurants that this will dramatically decrease the time and fuel costs for farmers. This way they can provide the most wholesome fresh food at the fairest price. The GBCFC currently buys from over 50 local farmers and producers and as the store grows and the distribution, more are on the way.

For the past several months the GBCFC has been aggressively meeting with restaurants to let them know the value of buying locally produced goods which promotes stewardship of our watershed, uses less oil to travel, is fresher and supports a local economy. The GBCFC currently distributes to about 12 local restaurants and has a list of over 60 that it will visit in the near future.

The GBCFC has already started working with a delivery company to make things easier for busy chefs. Until the GBCFC gets into the new space, orders must be picked up close to the time of delivery. The GBCFC is in pursuance of a refrigerated, health department certified delivery truck that it will use for in town deliveries for restaurants. This way farmers can drop off in one central location and not have to spend their afternoons driving around all over town.

For more information on the Web-based and iOS software system, please contact Manny Becerra. For the latest developments on DROPP, please contact the manager of DROPP, Elias Dechent.

We are in the process of designing an edible landscape around the building, providing demonstration food gardens for all to learn about growing food in the High Desert climate.

What you see here is a preliminary design for the raised planters and growing spaces there. On the left is an overall view of the garden spaces. On the right you see each garden space blown up so that you can see the proposed plants:

1. On the North side of the building is the Court Yard Garden, featuring plants that will thrive in shady conditions. These are edible plants that like protection from the sun and generally grow below the tree canopy in nature.

2. On the Northwest corner is the Medicinal Garden, an L-shaped garden that will feature plants that have been used for healing properties.

3. Next to the West steps leading to the main entrance to the store (see arrow) will be an Herb Garden with plants used for culinary purposes.

4. Below the herb garden is the Fruit & Berry Garden, featuring fruiting shrubs and trees. These are either in espalier form (on a horizontal plane) or trained on a trellis to conserve space.

5. In the new parking lot will be the Superfood Garden parking island for unusual edible plants that have high levels of nutrients or minerals, making them nutrient-dense and great for the health of our bodies.

Each garden will feature a production bed, which means an area where annual edible plants can be grown when in season. Thus, there will be space for summer tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant (and more), and winter edible leafy vegetables.

The Holland Project Reno (501c3) is an all-ages art and music initiative made for and by the young people in Reno and beyond. Holland strives to empower young people through access to music, art, diverse workshop opportunities, and community service and activism. The Holland Project Reno started at the same time that the Great Basin Community Food Co-op did many years ago and has remained by our side as our sister organization…offering assistance, support, resources and inspiration for us and the city of Reno at large.

Much like the co-op, Holland Project needs to raise a considerable amount of $$ in order to move into a real home…a venue where they can offer music space, art space, workshop space and more to our youth (see pictures of the new space!)

Believe it. It's real. Our community-owned food co-op has received $416,244 in member pledges and membership equity 10 year investments in order to proceed with constructing and moving into the new store / new co-op location.
Believe it. It’s real. Our community-owned food co-op has received $416,244 in member pledges and membership equity 10 year investments.

Congratulations Reno, the best thing to happen to REAL food is here!!

If anyone out there is still considering making a pledge to the co-op moving drive please take action. While we have our stated amount in pledges, our Advisory Board collection team now needs to round up these promised funds. All additional pledges are a wonderful cushion and safety blanket to make sure that our plan is executed in a timely and beautiful manner :) Please email Amber Sallaberry at amber@greatbasinfood.coop or use our online contact form for more info or to receive a copy of the prospectus.

On a stinky cheese side note: We apologize for the pungent aroma coming from the chill case. Last Friday we received our order from Cowgirl Creamery in Petaluma, CA. They are responsible for all of the amazing cheeses, marscapone and creme fraiche that we carry…oh yeah, did we mention that they use Organic Straus Milk to make their cheese?

So, we ordered the Red Hawk. Its flavor is just about as mind blowing as its smell. Its a triple cream organic soft cheese. Aged four weeks and washed with a brine solution that tints the rind a sunset red orange. Why not help clear the air and celebrate our co-op’s recent success with a wheel of Red Hawk and a nice loaf of our organic par baked sourdough or walnut bread?

The Great Basin Community Food Cooperative has officially raised enough $$ in member loan pledges to move forward with signing the lease!! Our minimum turn around point was $277,000. We are now at $329,363 in member loan pledges and 10 year membership equity payments!! If we raise another $86,000 then we can start our planning for the co-op community kitchen and cafe. See the carrot money thermometer.

We are down to our last week of the member loan drive with only two moving presentations remaining. Now that we have received the keys for the new co-op site (and because our presentations are across the street from the new location) we will be using this week as an opportunity to take the presentation attendees on a tour through the NEW co-op! Join us either Monday, April 4 at 5:30 p.m. or Thursday, April 7 at 5:30 for local wine, gluten-free organic macaroons and new co-op facility tour. Space is limited, RSVP today to reserve your spot.
