It is VERY rare for us to send out mass emails two days in a row, in fact we ususaly go two weeks in between big news. However, we are facing a very critical situation for the future of farming in Nevada and our community’s access to local grass and grain fed varieties of meat.

The short and simple is that WE NEED YOU to show up to a town hall meeting on Tuesday February 21 at 5:00pm at the Joe Crowley Student Union to express to the UNR administration and Reno City Council members that they SHOULD not rezone the most 104 fertile acres of the UNR main station farm to light industrial. OUR COMMUNITY NEEDS ACCESS TO GOOD FOOD, OPPORTUNITIES FOR FUTURE FARMERS TO LEARN and NOT another vacant, sterile commercial concrete complex. This town hall meeting was mandated by City Council members to UNR because of the LARGE AMOUNT OF PUBLIC OPPOSITION at the City Hall meeting in December. We need everyone to show up and oppose on Tuesday night and then again (this time bring ALL of your friends and family) at the March city council meeting where the rezoning decision will be finalized. More details TBA.

You might be wondering what that has to do with Wolf Pack Meats and our access as citizens to locally produced, grass or grain fed beef, pork and lamb? Currently, 5 of the co-op’s 6 local meat producers all process their meat through Wolf Pack Meats, the State of Nevada’s ONLY full scale, USDA certified, slaughter, process and package facility. In order for meat to be sold to the public through a retail entity such as the co-op or a local restaurant, the meat needs to be processed in a USDA certified facility. There are two separate agendas underway with UNR that we are in opposition to:

1. To rezone the 104 acre parcel of the Mainstation Farm on the McCarran strip to light industrial, which could mean that instead of a fertile area to teach future generations of farmers in Nevada, we will have yet another strip mall.

2. To create an RFP (request for proposal) to lease Wolf Pack Meats to a private group. This could very well mean that the facility closes in the short term, leaving our NV beef, pork and lamb producers out in the cold and our consumers with NO access to local meat…AND it could mean that the facility is no longer available as an educational tool for future farmers.

READ THE OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE BELOW:
Attached and copied below is a press release that may be of interest to you. Please forward to interested community members. Thank you for your continued support of Nevada agriculture.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Community Forum Scheduled to Discuss Future of
UNR Main Station Farm & Wolf Pack Meats

Local food advocate Shelley Brant plans to attend the Community Forum regarding the UNR Main Station Farm re-zoning proposal, and she has a list of questions for University officials. The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 21, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., at Joe Crowley Student Union, University of Nevada, Reno. Doors open at 5:00 p.m.

UNR will host the public forum at the request of the Reno City Council. University officials submitted a request to re-zone 104 acres of the farm from agricultural to light industrial for potential development at the Council meeting in December. UNR officials asked the Council to delay the vote as a result of public outcry over the re-zoning request.

Flooding, public education, further erosion of open-space, and the future of Wolf Pack Meats located near the property are among public concerns. More than 200 citizens attended the December meeting to voice opposition, and an online petition received more than 10,000 signatures.

The future of agricultural education at the University is one of Brant’s main concerns. The 104 acres proposed for re-zoning are among the most fertile on the farm. Additionally, Wolf Pack Meats, a facility for research and teaching, is located directly across from the acreage, and the slaughterhouse would likely be labeled undesirable, rather than a community asset, as development encroaches.

“Colleges across the country are expanding ag education because of the growth of the local food industry. UNR is perfectly situated to offer a unique and highly valuable ag program, and I would like to see the administration rebuild the College of Agriculture to suit 21st century needs,” Brant said. She added that Nevada students are leaving the state for education elsewhere and that Utah State University attributes increased enrollment to Nevada’s lack of agricultural programs.

Free parking for attendees to the Forum will be available on the third and fourth floors of the Whalen Parking Garage, and directional signage will be posted on North Virginia Street. Additional parking is in proximity to the Student Union.

Brant encourages the public to attend.
We are delaying opening our doors until Saturday at 8:00am…just one day. The last 48 hours have been full of unexpected, insane, exhilarating, frustrating, and hilarious events. For example, turning on the temporary diesel heater in the basement to help the soy sealant dry on the custom fixtures and having the sprinklers go off, flood the basement and wet all of our office equipment…including computers. Oh yeah, did we mention this was at midnight before the building inspection the following morning?!? Well, the great news is that we passed all of our inspections and we were granted our Certificate of Occupancy as of today (Thursday)! However, due to a few quirks that we need to work out to ensure that all of our members will have an awesome first experience at the new co-op, we are going to wait to open until Saturday. Thanks for your patience…we mean this because OUR new co-op is beyond amazing.

Hope to see you soon,

GBCFC’s delirious moving work crews

P.S. If you are interested in helping out with data entry, cleaning or shelf tags please show up tomorrow at the new co-op (240 Court St.) anytime between 9am and 8pm.

New Co-op Hopes to Open on Friday, February 10, 2012

Our co-op is now just a couple of weeks away from our hopeful soft opening on Friday February 10th, 2012!! Everyone involved has been hard at work installing the kitchen grease interceptor (last photo on the bottom right), the earthen cobb tree (last photo on the top right), our local handmade registers (middle bottom pic), painting our murals (left bottom), installing the irrigation system for the edible landscape plan (top left) and our massive coolers in the basement for Northern NV’s first ever regional local food distribution center (middle top)!!! Click on images below to see more moving pictures.

It seems like the momentum and excitement is growing just as fast as the project expense list for miscellaneous items. In order to get through final days and finishing touches that we need to complete this stage of our new co-op, we are calling upon our members and the community at large to help us find some of those tangible items. Please take a look in your garage, your neighbor’s garage, you favorite local thrift store, habitat for humanity, craigslist, etc. and help us finish our community store by donating any of the following:

Baskets for the produce area (funny, quirky, vintage, normal, whatever…)

An iPad for our Local Farmer Wholesale Distribution and Ordering Center (DROPP)

Used Washer and Dryer

Counters for the break-room area (6 ft x 2 ft deep)

10 ft of Cupboards

Metal lockers 12-24

Meeting Table 9 feet long

Chairs for our community cafe area

Dishes, silverware, cups and/or mason jars for the community cafe

If you are able and/or willing to donate any of the above items that is great! Or, if you have time to hunt for these items that is great too! We DO NOT want folks to just start dropping off a bunch of items at the co-op. Please send pictures, descriptions, or links (cragslist) to Amber Sallaberry – amber@greatbasinfood.coop. If you are interested in receiving a tax deductible donation receipt for your goods please be sure to include a receipt.

Thank you immensely…we are so close!

heart,

On December 14th at 6pm the Reno City Council will consider a proposal to rezone a portion of the UNR Main Station Farm light industrial. This land is ideally suited for what it already is, that is, agriculture and wildlife habitat. Local food and farming advocates are encouraging the Council to look to a different future for that property and refrain from building businesses on a flood plain, and ideally, zone the property agricultural and open space. Should the Council vote down this proposal or postpone this decision until a later time it would leave the door open for other plans that could be more beneficial to our community. It will also give our community more time to discuss and plan for healthier alternatives to the zoning. This will benefit the growing local food movement, future agricultural education for our youth and the sustainability of Wolf Pack Meats.

Please sign THIS PETITION opposing the rezoning of the UNR Main Station Farm.

We’re encouraging everyone to attend the meeting to show the City Council we the decision to reject the zone change. Please attend and fill out a public comment form to make your voice heard. No need to speak if you’d rather not, but your public comment form demonstrates the level of support.

5:30 – Arrive early to submit your Public Comment Form. They will not be accepted after 6 p.m. There will be a group of local food activists out front at 5pm helping people to fill out comments forms. You can either submit a comment card or sign up to speak for 3 minutes during the public comment section of the meeting.
6:00 – Meeting begins
Reno City Hall, Council Chambers

1 E. 1st Street, Reno (public parking garage next to CityHall)

PLEASE READ THIS VERY THOUGHTFUL LETTER IN OPPOSITION TO THE REZONING BY A VERY DEDICATED GBCFC CO-OP MEMBER-OWNER & LOCAL FOOD ACTIVIST:

It’s Not Local Food without Local Farmland and a University Agricultural Program to Back It
Farming in America is at a turning point. Rapidly rising global food demands, spiking food and fuel prices, and the ever-present threat of development are pressuring our farmers to squeeze the most out of their land or else leave.

We have been supporting our local farmers by buying locally at the Great Basin Community Food Coop and local farmers markets. We have joined CSAs and bought meat form local ranchers. We even go out to eat at local restaurants that are buying for local farmers.

The next important step to support our local farmers is to join efforts to protect the little farmland we have left in our community, such as the UNR Main Station farmland off McCarran and Mill Street. According to American Farmland Trust, we’re losing 2 acres of farmland to development every minute. The farms and ranches that supply local markets—those closest to urban centers—are the most at risk. Do you, as a community member, want to see the last remaining farmland in Reno turn into another box store development?

What’s unique about the 104-acre farmland is that it holds the floodwaters in times when the Truckee River overflows, thereby providing an important ecological function to filter the water and fertilizing the land. It functions as grassland for the research and teaching performed by the Rangeland Management program at UNR. It also provides a much-loved historic view corridor to the Truckee meadows, telling the story of why this flat, fertile land functions well as farmland and was chosen as such by pioneers. Shouldn’t this historic, agricultural and ecologically significant land be preserved for future generations?

The 104 acres of farmland that the UNR has annexed to the City of Reno is up for rezoning at the next City Council meeting, Wednesday, December 14h, at 6 pm. As a community, we are asking the City of Reno to postpone decision on this rezoning request. We ask UNR to work with us to develop a long-term sustainable plan for the entire farmland area at the Main Station, so that it can continue to provide the important flood acreage for our community, maintain the space for our land-grant UNR College of Agriculture, and preserve the last of our urban farmland, that speaks of the past and promises the future potential of our local food security.

With our combined vision, we can help keep agriculture viable in our community to continue providing the delicious foods, economic benefits and improved environmental quality we’ve all come to enjoy.

Sincerely,

Jana Vanderhaar, concerned citizen

Moving Update “What is taking so long?”

The countdown towards our big MOVING date has begun! Yes, I know that everyone has been eagerly awaiting an update and even more so, wondering what took so long!?! The short answer: we are moving from 500 sq ft into 7,000 sq ft. The longer answer: We made a very good decision to rebid our mechanical system and go with one that is much greener, cleaner and efficient, thus costing us less operational $$ in the long run. This change out required revisions and new drawings for every other major system and we lost about 3-4 months on the project.

The great news is that all of our tenant improvement construction work has begun, we finally have a signed lease and we are also just days away from receiving our permit from the City of Reno. On top of that, local artists have been working diligently on the hand painted mural and specialty bike wheel hand rails to complement our Edible Landscape Garden (coming spring 2012) and some of the other internal design surprises that we will be unveiling at our grand opening! Check out these pics to see the latest work:

The goal is to have a soft opening at the end of January 2012 at the new store. If everything stays 100% on track from now until the new year then I think we will achieve this. We will be announcing a solid open date as we get closer, be sure to stay tuned by visiting our CO-OP ON THE MOVE web page.

Updated Budget

Many of our member-owners saw the original budget in the moving prospectus that we published back in February 2011, there was a total of $508,305.50 for USES & SOURCES. As one can expect in these types of big moving projects, we have had to increase the budget almost 45% as actual contract bids came in, equipment costs, and the inherent costs such a large expansion. On the up side of things, we have received another $20,000 in additional grants that we wrote, $15,000 more in member-loans, a $13,500 loan from Buck’s Plumbing and Heating and very recently we received a $50,000 donation!!

How to help YOUR co-op offer lower prices to YOU

Did you know that your co-op purchases hundreds of organic, natural and GMO-free products through a national distributor called UNFI? Yep, everything that we can’t source from local producers and farmers we find through distributors who sell the kinds of products that our members want. UNFI is currently the nation’s leader in distributing wholesale natural goods…they sell to places like Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Raley’s Safeway, and your little neighborhood food co-op. Due to the fact that all of the above mentioned national chain food stores have the ability to buy massive quantities of food and products for all of their individual store, they are able to negotiate VERY LOW costs from UNFI. Whole Foods in fact has achieved the largest buying power in the United States for organic and natural goods through the UNFI distributor. It is estimated that our little co-op pays approximately 25% – 35% more per item from the same distributor!

So, how do we compete? The answer to that is a game plan strategy that we have been working on for over four years now. Fortunately, there is a wonderful national group called the National Cooperative Grocer’s Association (NCGA). The NCGA helps small, independent co-ops across the nation stand together with one UNIFIED buying power through UNFI and various distributors. NCGA has now achieved the second largest BUYING POWER for organics in the nation just behind Whole Foods. Our co-op has goals of applying and being accepted into the NCGA organization. However, in order to be accepted we need to reach $2,000,000 per year in gross sales! The great news is that in our tiny little 500 sq ft. store on Plumas Street, we hope to finish the 2011 fiscal year with just about $1,000,000 in gross sales. If all of our members decide to vote with their dollars at our new location on Court Street then we will reach the $2,000,000 sales mark in no time at all! Please support your co-op in offering better priced goods for our entire community, come shop today!

Seasons Greetings,

Two Important Updates:

*THE GREAT BASIN BASKET MADE ITS FINAL CSA DELIVERY FOR 2011 YESTERDAY. This means that Fallon Farmers will NOT be making regular deliveries on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please pre-calculate your local orders as early as possible to ensure timely delivery. We will do our best to back-stock popular items like winter squash, onions, and garlic as much as possible to make sure we can fill your orders.
*If you would like to receive a produce order for this coming Friday morning- I need your order today by 4pm as Veritable Vegetable is closed on Thanksgiving. If you have my number and text me before midnight, I will get the order in for you.

Thanks,
