Howdy Friends,

Part of the GBCFC staff spent most of the last three days attending the Small Farm Conference in Fallon, NV. It was a fantastic educational and networking opportunity. There is a lot of exciting and admirable work being done by farmers, NRCS, NDOA, USDA, Nevada Cooperative extension, Nevada grown, and many more to provide our area with the food that nourishes us!

We had a visitor, Robin Sedeyl, from La Montanita Food Cooperative in New Mexico at the conference. La Montanita has been building an amazing local food infrastructure in their region for the past 30 years! They are the ones who taught us about food sheds three years ago at a co-op conference in Portland. Robin provided us with much needed guidance and experience as we embark on building a local food distribution hub and growing the GBCFC Store. Thank You to everyone involved in this years conference :)

Wow! Its March and it sure feels like spring, Nevada style…

The Vernal Equinox is on March 20…… :) Remember to stock up on local seeds at the store too…

If you are interested in helping to create a stronger local food system right here where we live, please come to one of our two remaining presentations that take place right across the street from our potential new site. If we can pull this big move together, it will be the future home of a local food distribution center and much more room to display local food from our lovely farmers & producers. This means: working together, being more efficient, building infrastructure, getting prices down, building community, more local food, more locally produced goods, a healthier food shed, healthier happier people, land, and creatures!!!!!

The goal that we have set to reach to make our big move a reality is $415,000. If ALL OF OUR active 2600 member owners pre-pay their memberships for ten years ($15 per year x 10= $150), we would almost reach our goal! If 415 of our members can loan the GBCFC $1000, we would also reach our goal. We can also accept loans up to $50,000. Call our office for a loan prospectus at 775-324-2922

The next presentation is tonight at 5:30pm. The last presentation is on Monday, March 7 at 5:30pm. Please go here to RSVP!

Good News: Our local seeds have arrived and are for sale in the store!

We have two sources of Local, Certified Organic Seeds from Churchill Butte Organics and Mewaldt’s Organic Produce.

Happy Snow Time!

Tomorrow we will be honoring our farmers at the 2nd Annual Love Your Farmer Dinner. We will use this as an opportunity to network with the farmers and encourage them to send us their quarterly estimated availability, weekly availability lists- that include quantities and pricing. This should make it a lot easier for restaurants, institutions, and members to order and access local food. If we can raise the funding we need for our new site, we will be part of a local distribution center that will also facilitate this process.

You’re Invited! Sneak Peak Co-op Moving Presentation

You’re Invited to attend an exclusive sneak peak co-op moving presentation. All presentations will be held at the Garden Pavilion, 250 Court St, located across the street from the proposed, new Great Basin Community Food Co-op location.

Nevada Grown Beef. Now at YOUR GBCFC!

Another exciting “move” for the co-op this week is that we have started carrying our first ever Nevada beef. Yep, Albaugh Ranch in Fallon, NV butchered a whole cow for us through Wolf Pack Meats. One of the comments that is typical to a new person trying this beef is:

“Its the best piece of–Grass-Fed, Pastured, Antibiotic and Hormone-Free–meat I’ve ever eaten.”

Local Vegan Soup!

Gino and Juli Scala of Great Full Gardens (you probably recognize the name from some of the hydroponically-grown tomatoes that you buy at the co-op) have just opened a soup and sandwich kitchen up at UNR called Pathways. Now that the process is certified, the co-op has started to buy quarts of their vegan soups. No GMO ingredients and organic where possible. Find them in our frozen section today!

Greetings!

We have a new local grower who can supply basil in the winter! More details next week….

I would like to salute our local winter vegetables at this time with a quote, the winter vegetables that strengthen our livers and give us more than sustenance:

The beet is the most intense of vegetables. The radish, admittedly, is the more feverish, but the fire of the radish is a cold fire, the fire of discontent not passion. Tomatoes are lusty enough, yet there runs through tomatoes an undercurrent of frivolity. Beets are deadly serious.
