THE MOVING HAS BEGUN AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

It’s official…we are moving in! If you have time, a truck or trailer, two hands, a big heart and want to have some moving fun then be sure to take part!

On that note, we could really use YOUR help with the following:

Friday (2/3/12) night fun (beginning at 5pm): Join Amber’s basement crew to scrape floors, sweep, mop and paint! (240 Court St.)

Saturday (2/4/12) fun 9am – ??: Meet Amber & Tony again at 9am at the current site (542 1/2 Plumas St.) to get our office and backstock areas moved over. Please come ready to pack boxes and move! If you have a truck or vehicle good for moving that is great :)

ALSO, AT 12:00pm on Saturday (2/4/12) in front of the new store the Reno News and Review is going to be taking pictures for the story that they are doing on the co-op’s opening next week. We would like to fill this photo with our awesome member-owners! Please come down for this photo even if you don’t have time to come at any other point.

ALSO ALSO on Saturday (2/4/12), Join Jana Vanderhaar for an Saturday Edible Garden Workshop/work party at the new site (240 Court St.) from either 9am – 12pm or 1pm – 3pm

Edible Landscape Soil Preparation and Irrigation Workshop – We’ll be double digging beds, amending and adding soil and compost, and installing drip irrigation. We’ll also move the raised planters from the old Coop to the new, so some strong muscles and a pick up to haul these would be appreciated! And we’ll sow cover crops in selected beds to build soil and add some quick green color to the landscape. Please bring garden tools, gloves, water, and a lunch.

Sunday (2/5/12) fun 9am – ??: Join Melissa’s crew at the new site to get the bulk and grocery shelving departments set up. Please come ready to clean set up shelves, clean and organize.

Tuesday (2/7/12), Wednesday (2/8/12) and Thursday (2/9/12) at 5:00am, please come and help all of us to take in our HUGE deliveries from our distributors and get them on the shelves and into the coolers!

UPDATE (02/07/12):
Today’s 5am delivery went well. Let’s do it again tomorrow! There will be more coffee, graciously donated courtesy of Mark Trujillo at The Hub Coffee Roasters…

And of course we’ll have loads more product to set in our amazing new home. (Wow, it’s really coming along now.)

Additionally, Jana has requested volunteers to help plant trees tomorrow at 240 Court St. between the hours of 1-5pm.

There will be NO DELIVERY ON THURSDAY but we will be moving things all day from the old store to the new…. Come and hang!

THURSDAY (2/9/12): THIS IS THE BIG PUSH! We are closing our store at 542 1/2 Plumas St. Please show up at the old site at 9am to help us move EVERYTHING from this location to our new spot. This is a call for ALL HANDS ON DECK…so if you’ve got an hour or two to give then join in the greatbasin-ness!

GBCFC Moving Update #2

GBCFC On the Move!

As mentioned in our first moving update, we had a couple of construction setbacks which delayed our open date from September 1, 2011 until ??? Now that we are back on track and moving forward, we are looking at opening the new co-op Storefront on either November 1, 2011 or January 1, 2012. We have been fortunate enough to receive some wonderful feedback from our mentors at the National Cooperative Grocers Association. They helped us to see how potentially chaotic it could be if we try to move at any point past November 1 through the following December holiday season. Therefore, if the building is not ready for us to move in by Nov 1, the actual move will take place on January 1, 2012.

The wonderful upside to the increased delay is the fact that we now have been able to coordinate and organize more of our internal processes. We have also been able to work with Jana Vanderhaar, certified edible landscape designer, on the exterior foliage at the new co-op site. The plan and design is absolutely inspiring and amazing! Please check it out here and feel free to send any comments, questions, concerns, or a desire to be involved to the local food committee.

Now, let’s turn our attention to the last day of August and focus on the amazing harvest that is underway here in Northern NV! As many of you are probably aware, the co-op sends out a weekly list of what’s available locally for our community business partners and members to place special orders. Edible Landscape. Feedback Requested.

As you know, your Coop is soon moving to a new, bigger location on the corner of Flint and Court. We are in the process of designing an edible landscape around the building, providing demonstration food gardens for all to learn about growing food in the High Desert climate.

What you see here is a preliminary design for the raised planters and growing spaces there. On the left is an overall view of the garden spaces. On the right you see each garden space blown up so that you can see the proposed plants:

1. On the North side of the building is the Court Yard Garden, featuring plants that will thrive in shady conditions. These are edible plants that like protection from the sun and generally grow below the tree canopy in nature.

2. On the Northwest corner is the Medicinal Garden, an L-shaped garden that will feature plants that have been used for healing properties.

3. Next to the West steps leading to the main entrance to the store (see arrow) will be an Herb Garden with plants used for culinary purposes.

4. Below the herb garden is the Fruit & Berry Garden, featuring fruiting shrubs and trees. These are either in espalier form (on a horizontal plane) or trained on a trellis to conserve space.

5. In the new parking lot will be the Superfood Garden parking island for unusual edible plants that have high levels of nutrients or minerals, making them nutrient-dense and great for the health of our bodies.

Each garden will feature a production bed, which means an area where annual edible plants can be grown when in season. Thus, there will be space for summer tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant (and more), and winter edible leafy vegetables.

Calling all of our sweet-tooth organic-loving foodie friends:
On Thursday, September 8th come prepared to experience the most decadent, amazing, rich and enriching organic dessert experience that Reno has ever tasted! Some of our food co-op’s behind the scenes, “closet dessert connoisseurs” will be whippin’ up their very best organic desserts in the name of art, music, and community space for Reno’s youth. This is a one of a kind event that YOU or YOUR TASTE BUDS will definitely not want to miss.

The Holland Project Reno (501c3) is an all-ages art and music initiative made for and by the young people in Reno and beyond. Holland strives to empower young people through access to music, art, diverse workshop opportunities, and community service and activism. The Holland Project Reno started at the same time that the Great Basin Community Food Co-op did many years ago and has remained by our side as our sister organization…offering assistance, support, resources and inspiration for us and the city of Reno at large.

Much like the co-op, Holland Project needs to raise a considerable amount of $$ in order to move into a real home…a venue where they can offer music space, art space, workshop space and more to our youth (see pictures of the new space!)

Local Produce Truck Benefit Show

On April 29 at 9 p.m. at Lincoln Lounge we are having the first of 3 benefit shows in hopes that we raise $1,600 for a refrigerated/freezer truck that one of our farmers is selling in Lovelock, NV as part of the Cooperative Distribution Center (CDC) project for local farm goods. The cover is $5 and the the owners of the bar (also owners of Imperial and Granite St.) have said that they will match whatever we make at the door. Earth Day 2011 – Food Village

On Sunday, May 1, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., your food co-op is hosting the Food Village at Earth Day! Come join us and just about every other awesome community food group like Slow Food Reno, Friends of NV Organics, Edible Reno-Tahoe and more!! Believe it. It’s real. Our community-owned food co-op has received $416,244 in member pledges and membership equity 10 year investments.

Congratulations Reno, the best thing to happen to REAL food is here!!

If anyone out there is still considering making a pledge to the co-op moving drive please take action. While we have our stated amount in pledges, our Advisory Board collection team now needs to round up these promised funds. All additional pledges are a wonderful cushion and safety blanket to make sure that our plan is executed in a timely and beautiful manner :) Please email Amber Sallaberry at amber@greatbasinfood.coop or use our online contact form for more info or to receive a copy of the prospectus.

On a stinky cheese side note: We apologize for the pungent aroma coming from the chill case. Last Friday we received our order from Cowgirl Creamery in Petaluma, CA. They are responsible for all of the amazing cheeses, marscapone and creme fraiche that we carry…oh yeah, did we mention that they use Organic Straus Milk to make their cheese?

So, we ordered the Red Hawk. Its flavor is just about as mind blowing as its smell. Its a triple cream organic soft cheese. Aged four weeks and washed with a brine solution that tints the rind a sunset red orange. Why not help clear the air and celebrate our co-op’s recent success with a wheel of Red Hawk and a nice loaf of our organic par baked sourdough or walnut bread?

We know that chefs are busy people and that picking up your produce/special orders at the co-op isn’t always conducive to your business. The Great Basin Community Food Cooperative has officially raised enough $$ in member loan pledges to move forward with signing the lease!! Our minimum turn around point was $277,000. We are now at $329,363 in member loan pledges and 10 year membership equity payments!! If we raise another $86,000 then we can start our planning for the co-op community kitchen and cafe. See the carrot money thermometer.

We are down to our last week of the member loan drive with only two moving presentations remaining. Now that we have received the keys for the new co-op site (and because our presentations are across the street from the new location) we will be using this week as an opportunity to take the presentation attendees on a tour through the NEW co-op! Join us either Monday, April 4 at 5:30 p.m. or Thursday, April 7 at 5:30 for local wine, gluten-free organic macaroons and new co-op facility tour. Space is limited, RSVP today to reserve your spot.

The Member Loan Drive is doing phenomenally well, we are well over $200,000 towards our basic move-in goal of $277,000. The ultimate goal, of course, is to open the community cafe and commercial kitchen at the same time as all of our other departments on September 1,2011…which brings us back to our initial goal of $415,000. However, $277,000 is the “let’s sign the lease”/project turn around point.

Thanks to all of our co-op’s wonderful members we are getting MUCH closer!

Join us tomorrow evening for a Co-op moving presentation across the street from the potential new location on the corner of Court St. and Flint St. 5:30 – 6:30pm at the Garden Pavilion next to the Lake Mansion, 250 Court St.

This is the first of the next 4 extended series of presentations. We will be talking about where the co-op has been, where we hope to go…especially in the face of rising gas prices and the need for better local food infrastructure here in Northern NV. We have hired a team of professional designers/layout folks from Cooperative Development Services and we are excited to share the most recent floor plans for the new 7,000 sq. ft. facility!

This is a great opportunity to learn, ask questions, meet our co-founders and advisory board members and figure out how you would like to get involved. The variety of ways to HELP YOUR FOOD CO-OP is endless: painting, edible gardening landscape, pledging loans, moving boxes, investing your 10 year membership or even just continuing to shop ARE ALL FABULOUS WAYS TO GET INVOLVED WITH THE MOVE!

Our co-op now supports over 50 local producers! BE A PART OF THE GREATEST LOCAL FOOD MOVEMENT THAT NORTHERN NV HAS EVER SEEN. It’s happening…it takes a village the size of Reno food lovers to raise a co-op :)

Great Basin News

GBCFC members have contributed almost $180,000 towards our move to the new facility this summer!!! This brings us closer to our goal of moving in with the basic expansion of our departments and all of the components that we need to kick off the local food distribution facility…in fact, we are just $97,000 short of the project turn around point. What does “project turn around” mean? It means that if we don’t raise at least $97,000 more in the next few weeks, we then conclude that the moving project is not viable and the co-op closes its doors on January 31, 2012.

If you want to help your co-op move and contribute to our future success and longevity, then be sure to sign up for a moving presentation. We will be hosting four (4) more moving presentations from March 28th – April 4th. We will be serving wine, cheese and snacks to accommodate these 5:30-6:30 p.m. happy hour moving presentation sessions. We need ALL OF OUR MEMBERS SUPPORT to be successful! Commercial Kitchen and Community Cafe

As many of our beloved members are probably aware, the ultimate goal is to raise $415,000 in order to plan and execute the commercial basement kitchen and community cafe upstairs. In order for these exciting aspects of the project to take place by September 1, 2011 we still need to raise $235,000 in member loan pledges ($1,000 minimum) or 10 year membership equity payments ($150).

To help us better visually see OUR co-op’s progress through out the drive, we have placed a carrot $$ thermometer on our website.
