By now, as a GBCFC member-owner, you should have received the annual Great Basin Community Food Co-op membership letter and the information regarding our upcoming move to a new, larger location. Yes, these are very exciting times for the biggest little co-op in the world! For several months, our moving team has been working on the general layout and design for the new space. We have planned a local farmer distribution center in the basement, factored in a small kitchen for fresh baked goods and prepared foods, and expanded most of the sections that the co-op currently has, including local produce and meat. We will host our first ever organic beer and wine section and will have community cafe space for our members to hang out and enjoy! While there is much exciting development in the works, we are still looking for YOUR feedback as to how the co-op can better meet the needs of its members.

If you have received the brochure about the member loan drive and are interested in learning more, our co-founders would like to invite you to our moving presentation and Question & Answer series (see below for more info). If you have no idea what brochure we’re talking about or the annual membership letter, please go here to view an electronic version of each. One important piece of information that we did not highlight in the moving brochure is how easy it is to get involved and help make this move a success for your co-op. One of our biggest needs right now are loans from our member-owners in the minimum amount of $1,000. However, if that amount if too much for your budget currently, please consider investing membership equity into your co-op.

If all of our members paid for the next 10 years of their memberships, total $150 investment, we would have the $415,000 that we need to move!!

On that note, we would now like to invite you to attend a presentation about your co-op’s upcoming relocation on any Monday, starting March 28, and any Thursday through April 7.

The dates for the presentations are:

Monday, March 28

Thursday, March 31

Monday, April 4

Thursday, April 7

In mid-February the GBCFC will be hosting its 2nd Annual Love Your Farmer Dinner for all of the current local farmers and producers who supply the co-op. Last Year’s dinner was a huge success in that we probably had the most amount of Northern Nevada farmers in one room, at one time, talking about the upcoming growing season. The dinner was a great opportunity to pamper our beloved farmers with great food and kind gifts. It also provided a productive forum where everyone involved was able to talk about how we can better meet our community’s need for local, sustainable food.

This year we need all of our members to think of a simple way that they can thank our lovely farmers. A gift certificate, a homemade candle, a homemade mixed CD, movie passes, hand made scarves or hats, etc. We have approx. 50 farmers and local producers who will be attending the February event. If you are interested in providing a gift or card or a token of your appreciation please e-mail info@greatbasinfood.coop or drop it off at the co-op office (next door to the co-op) by Saturday February 11, 2011.

Wait, it gets even better…

Project Moonshine is currently accepting applications from local high school students for the upcoming program in 2011, which includes a documentary on local food production and sustainability. This will be a hands-on, educational documentary video production program that chronicles a year in the life of local Northern Nevada farmers. There is no cost to participate in Project Moonshine, but acceptance is competitive.

Project Moonshine is a non-profit organization designed to teach filmmaking skills to students by providing opportunities to document important events happening in their community. Started in 2006, Project Moonshine has made documentaries on a variety of subjects including Sonic Youth, Califone, Mount Eerie, Orchestra Baobab, Tour de Nez, Artown, Nevada Beekeepers and Dada Motel…READ MORE

As many of you have heard, your food co-op is moving to a new building this summer/early fall of 2011. Our lease is up at the current location on January 31, 2012. Our moving committee has been working on finding a new location since February of 2010….the great news is that we think we’re close, very close. In order to make this move a success we are going to need a lot of community support and awareness for the greatest local food movement that Reno has ever seen. Did you know that your little co-op started buying from 3 local producers back in 2005? At the end of 2010 we were able to send the annual farmer letter to 51 local producers!! Its happening, and its very beautiful to watch and participate in. Join in. :)

Annual Letter

Once a year, at the end of January, your co-op sends out a paper letter to every single one of its member-owners letting them know how their community-owned business is doing and what’s on the horizon. This year’s letter is sure to be packed with lots of juicy information and we want to make sure you get it! Help save us a lot of time, money and energy by making sure that we have YOUR UPDATED ADDRESS on file. You can come down or call the store at 775-324-6133. In the spirit of the the 4th Cooperative Principle — Autonomy and Independence, please take the time to participate and do your part in this very necessary food movement!

QUICK REFRESHER — The 7 Cooperative Principles:

Voluntary and Open Membership
Cooperatives are voluntary organizations, open to all people able to use its services and willing to accept the responsibilities of membership, without gender, social, racial, political or religious discrimination.

Democratic Member Control
Cooperatives are democratic organizations controlled by their members—those who buy the goods or use the services of the cooperative—who actively participate in setting policies and making decisions.

Members’ Economic Participation
Members contribute equally to, and democratically control, the capital of the cooperative. This benefits members in proportion to the business they conduct with the cooperative rather than on the capital invested.

Autonomy and Independence
Cooperatives are autonomous, self-help organizations controlled by their members. If the co-op enters into agreements with other organizations or raises capital from external sources, it is done so based on terms that ensure democratic control by the members and maintains the cooperative’s autonomy.

Education, Training and Information
Cooperatives provide education and training for members, elected representatives, managers and employees so they can contribute effectively to the development of their cooperative. Members also inform the general public about the nature and benefits of cooperatives.

Cooperation among Cooperatives
Cooperatives serve their members most effectively and strengthen the cooperative movement by working together through local, national, regional and international structures.

Concern for Community
While focusing on member needs, cooperatives work for the sustainable development of communities through policies and programs accepted by the members.

In the spirit of thankfulness, we would like to encourage all members to take a moment and SUPPORT OUR SMALL FAMILY FARMERS by making sure that Bills in favor of Big Agriculture don’t put them out of business.

UPDATE: Senate Bill 510 — (The Food Safety Modernization Bill…a very dangerous bill that could really hurt our small local farmers and producers)

A cloture vote passed on Wednesday, November 17, but . . .

there will be ANOTHER cloture vote on the 29th on an amended “manager’s” version of the bill.

As we understand it, this new version will include the Tester-Hagan amendments to exempt small farms, as we have consistently demanded.

In fact, if this new version DOESN’T pass cloture, the Senate will revert to considering the bill WITHOUT the small farm exemption; obviously we don’t want that to happen.

As a reminder, it takes 60 votes to pass cloture

A simple stance to take when calling our senators:

a) support the Tester-Hagan small farm exemptions, but

b) oppose the final bill. https://secure.downsizedc.org/etp/campaigns/111

Call both senators today–it takes less than a minute!

Senator Harry Reid (202) 224-3542 OR Senator John Ensign (202) 224-6244

Thank you and have a wonderful, warm Thanksgiving!

We urge everyone out there who has not already contacted our Senators to please do fist thing in the morning! The future of small family farms and local food is at stake!

Senator Harry Reid
(202) 224-3542
Senator John Ensign
(202) 224-6244

On Nov. 17, the Senate is finally set to vote on the controversial bill (s.510), and small-scale and organic farmers urgently need two important amendments so the new regulations don’t place huge financial burdens on small farmers.

Without these two important amendments — currently opposed by all the big names in agribusiness — small farmers will not be protected from inappropriate regulations meant to curtail the largest and most likely culprits of food safety outbreaks in the U.S.: giant, consolidated agribusinesses and their massive processing partners.

<a href="http://action.fooddemocracynow.org/call/stand_up_for_small_farmers/?akid=224.162544.my97Pg&rd=1&t=5" title="In the next 24 hours, the Senate is set to vote on the much anticipated Food Safety Modernization Bill (S.510)." class="button"">LEARN MORE ABOUT THE FOOD SAFETY MODERNIZATION BILL (S.510)»»

For those who have followed this debate closely, one needs to only consider that earlier this week a Who’s Who of Big Ag sent Congress a letter demanding that your Senators not allow the Tester Amendment nor the Manager’s Amendments to pass.

The battle lines are drawn, with the American Meat Institute, National Chicken Council, National Meat Association, National Pork Producers Council and the National Turkey Federation once again railing against small-scale family farms and local food production.

It is clear that we need food safety legislation. However, without the Tester-Hagan Amendment, small farmers will be subject to “one size fits all” food safety regulations that will unfairly subject them to the same standards as Tyson, Smithfield, DeCoster and the worst food safety abusers.

Sustainable Ag groups such as the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) have been hard at work for the past 18 months on this bill, protecting the interests of small farmers and we need to support their efforts.

Farmer Protections from The Tester-Hagan Amendment

The first and most important provision is the Tester-Hagan amendment, which provides an exemption for family farmers who gross less than $500,000 and sell direct to farmers markets, restaurants, customers and local stores within 400 miles of their farm/processing facility. As the only organic farmer in the U.S. Senate, John Tester has made sure that this amendment protects the growing local food movement and allows small and beginning farmers the opportunity to grow the most economically vibrant part of agriculture, without excessive fees or paperwork that could harm smaller-scale producers.

The Manager’s Amendment

In addition, the Manager’s Amendment, which includes 5 vital amendments, would protect small-scale farmers from burdensome paperwork, offer farmers competitive grants for food safety training, allow them to engage in co-mingling of products from multiple farms in processing, reduce paperwork and excessive traceability requirements, and protect wildlife and wildlife habitat.

While we understand that there are fears from many members within the sustainable food and agriculture community regarding S. 510, only the Tester-Hagan Amendment and the Manager’s Amendment stand to offer real protections to small-scale local and organic farmers that are at the center of a resurgence in agriculture today, while protecting all of America’s food consumers.

__________

To help bring this issue a little closer to home please understand that this bill could harm the MAJORITY of the co-op’s small scale producers. Here is one of the emails that we received this evening from local producer Hannah Tangeman of Hulsman Ranch:

Hi,
I know there will be very little time when you guys get this but hope you might be able to make a few calls or send a mass email to your members. This would certainly affect people like me and I hope that the Tester amendment is approved or it will be more difficult for little people.
Thanks.

Please check out the Case Statement to Move to learn more about your co-op’s exciting expansion into a larger facility.

Tax-deductible Donations Welcome!

The co-op’s lease at our current site will be up in January 2012, and in order to keep our food co-op alive and thriving we are calling upon our member-owners and the community at-large to help out financially. We will now be accepting in-person and online tax-deductible donations from anyone interested in helping the GBCFC to reach our goals for expansion.

After a donation is made you will be sent information for your tax purposes.

2011 Member Loan Drive

In February, your GBCFC kicked off the member loan drive…not to be confused with a donation. Co-op’s are unique entities, especially here in the State of Nevada– the GBCFC is the only currently existing food co-op that supports our local growers and producers. Due to co-op’s unique nature, they are not always eligible for traditional financing and lending opportunities. Therefore, when they approach times of necessary growth, or improvement that require significant amounts of capital, they look to their members to loan them money for a period of time.

On that note, we would now like to invite you to attend a presentation about your co-op’s upcoming relocation on any Monday, starting March 28, and any Thursday through April 7.

While we will always great-fully accept donations from anyone in any amount, we will be calling upon our membership to help play a vital role in the establishment and growth of our community-owned business and the expansion of the cooperative movement. We will be announcing more detailed information about the members loan drive on Jan. 1 2011. In the mean time, please help your co-op to be well and prosper by making a donation today.

Case Statement to Move

The Great Basin Community Food Cooperative is planning a move in 2011 to improve our ability to meet YOUR needs.

542-1/2 Plumas Street Storefront (Prior to Occupancy)

Since our founding in 2005, we have rapidly and steadily grown to a current active membership of over 2500. We are currently operating in a facility with 500 square feet of retail space in which we offer over 1,200 items including a large number of seasonally available products from local food growers and artisans. Locally sourced products have been particularly successful. In 2006 we started selling products from three locally-based food growers and artisans; now we sell products from 46 local sources. In 2009, annual revenue paid to these local food producers exceeded $55,000, tripling since 2008. Gross sales have followed a similar growth trend, increasing from $250,000 in 2008 to over $500,000 in 2009, with projections close to $900,000 by the end of 2010!

Justification for Moving

GBCFC Member Survey Results, October 2010

While the fact that the current lease on 542 ½ Plumas St. facility ends Jan. 31, 2012 is forcing us to look for a new site, the most important reason we need to move is to make sure that we have the retail and back stock space for our members and our farmers.

The current back stock and retail spaces are far too small to comfortably meet our current volume of sales. Even if we had sufficient retail and back stock space now, we need to allow for growth in the subsequent 3-5 year period. The additional space is essential for the Co-op to increase sales volumes and qualify for discounts from wholesalers, improve our financial position and reduce or hold the line on prices for our membership.

Finally, our area’s producers need to cut down on their trips to town. It is not an efficient use of the farmers’ time and resources or of nonrenewable resources to make numerous deliveries to a co-op (and surrounding restaurants) when a centrally located facility would allow for them to reduce their costs thereby reducing the cost to the co-op.

GBCFC Monthly Sales Graph

GBCFC Membership Growth Graph

New Site Size and Location

Most coops in the country with 2,500-3,000 active members operate with 3,000-7,000 square feet of retail space to adequately meet member needs with a variety and volume of goods. Because the largest concentrations of our membership (based on zip codes) live in the area and have requested on our recent member survey that we stay in the same neighborhood, we are currently evaluating several commercial properties in this southwest Reno vicinity.

Financing the Move!

We are presently putting together a detailed time-line and budget for the planned move and will conduct a member loan drive from Feb. 10 to March 25, 2011.

We would now like to invite you to attend a presentation about your co-op’s upcoming relocation on any Monday, starting March 28, and any Thursday through April 7.

Prior to the member loan drive we will be accepting tax deductible donations through our fiscal agent, The Local Food System Network. Donations can be made starting on Nov. 1, 2010 on our website’s online donation page or in-store by check, credit card or cash.

Contact finance@greatbasinfood.coop or call our office at 775-324-2922 for more information. The main sources of capital to fund the co-op’s next move will be from donations, grants, the member loan drive and possibly traditional bank loans.

Key Features of the Proposed New Food Co-op Site

While more space for grocery items, healthy to go meals, and back stock is a priority, we are also planning a central storage facility for local producers. The new location will emphasize bulk goods in order to cut down on waste that will end up in a landfill and it will also incorporate numerous other “green” features. We also want to have an herb garden, space for demonstrations and more space for locally baked goods. Finally, with a larger site we can better facilitate one stop shopping while providing a space for the community to connect and interact.

Turkey Time

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and what a better way to boost our local economy by keeping your money local at your neighborhood food co-op. We have all of your basic holiday needs including local potatoes, mushrooms, greens, onions and more! You can also come down to the co-op and sign up for a special ordered Organic Turkey, Free Range Turkey, Vegetarian Tofurkey, Vegan Field Roast and 1 lb offerings of local NV’s Own stuffing mushrooms! Ask a staff member for more details about wholesale turkey and Veg turkey options.

We have spoken with a few of the the local turkey producers and most of them seem to be sold out for the season…there is a woman who recently told us that she has birds left for Thanksgiving or Christmas orders. Contact us soon though because supply is dwindling. Her name is Shannon Gray, in Gardnerville, and she can be reached at 775-782-4747 or e-mailed at: shannon@greytv.com.

Local Turkeys at the Food Co-op. Advocate.

You may be wondering why the co-op doesn’t have local turkeys yet… Our answer: According to the Health Department, we can only buy from certified sources (produce/veggie vendors that have their certification with the department of agriculture or meat/poultry producers who butcher in a USDA certified facility). At this point in time there are not many meat producers who utilize a USDA certified facility and no poultry producers that we know of. We, here at the co-op do our best to advocate and promote this kind of localized production and we need our members and local consumers to do the same. Start asking for it and talking about it, seek out venues that provide local meat products (like your local farmer, farmer’s markets and the co-op for Hulsman beef and lamb) and attend meetings that pertain to local meat production in NV. As long as our interest and demand holds strong, the market will move in that direction. The co-op started with three (3) local producers five (5) years ago and now we have over 47! Change happens when you want it to :)

Bookluck

The coop’s monthly Book Luck meeting is today (Wednesday, Oct. 27) at 6:30 p.m. in the co-op parking lot (or the office if its cold). Everyone is welcome and there is no assigned book–just come and tell us what you’ve been reading lately! This is a great way for members to share what they know with each other and learn new things. Bring some food to share, a plate and utensils to eat with, and a chair or something to sit on, and join us for some fun and enlightening conversation.

Survey Reminder

We need your input to make the co-op’s next move to a bigger location a success! Take the survey here

Gluten-Free Cookies are Back

Absolutely Michelle’s homemade Gluten-Free cookies are back!! Yeah, we sold out in under a day last week, so she tripled the batch this week. Mmmmm, I think this very well could be the best GF cookie we’ve ever tried…soft and delicious!!

Update on Credit/Debit Card Fee

Last week we sent out an announcement letting everyone know that we discontinued the credit card fee due to member request. What we didn’t state was that there were quite a few other reasons and good logic behind our Finance Committee’s decision. We received so much feedback and response from our smart, aware and passionate members that we posted some info about the removal of the credit/debit card fee on our website’s FAQ section. Read more at faq.greatbasinfood.coop.

Omega 3: Did you know?

Do you get enough omega 3 fatty acids in your diet? Did you know that these are the only essential nutrients that your bod NEEDS but does not manufacture? A lack of omega 3s can cause a variety of symptoms from depression, skin disorders, cardiovascular disease and an inability to concentrate. To learn more click here. Due to popular request, your co-op just started stocking Nordic Naturals omega 3 fish oil and cod liver oil. We also carry a vegan omega 3 cultivated from algae. In our fridge section we have liquid flax oil (you can also special order this for better savings), In bulk we have walnuts and flax seeds, and in the freezer we have LOCAL grass-fed beef and lamb and wild coho salmon filets… all great sources of omega 3 fatty acids!

Save the Date

On Sept. 9 the USDA is hosting a Red Meat Mobile Slaughter Unit Information Session from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. The goal of this information session is to educate local farmers, ranchers and processors on how to set up mobile slaughter units so that they can receive a federal grant of inspection and sell their goods to the public. For more information or to RSVP contact: Clint Koble 775.784.5411 ext.117

Have a great day! – GBCFC
